1. WHO IS HENRYNURSE.COM

I’m Joy, RN, founder of henrynurse.com. I started this blog in 2024 after giving birth and becoming a parent. That experience came with a sudden realization that raising a child in the United States is very expensive, and especially so in Los Angeles.

It also made me step back and question whether I wanted to switch from Per diem RN work to full-time bedside nursing, knowing that it would likely mean barely seeing my child just to afford living and raising a family in LA. That moment pushed me to buckle down and start reading, learning, and researching what a sound financial plan could look like as a nurse while raising a child, maintaining a satisfying career, and still living a good quality life.

As I went through this process, and as someone who has been an RN in Los Angeles for almost 20 years and started my nursing career in 2009, I came to an uncomfortable realization. I had been somewhat careless with how I handled my hard-earned nurse money. In fact, at 40 years old, 2024 was the first time I actually created a real budget.

Looking back, I was in a very fortunate position early in my career. I had an aunt who was a veteran RN who constantly talked to me about saving and investing early as nurse. (Read: Money Influencers Part: 1)  I was also raised by very frugal parents. Now in my early 40s, I often wish I had listened more closely to both my aunt and my parents.

That reflection is what led me to create this space. I started this primarily as a way to hold myself accountable with my finances as a nurse. I am also learning to accept that it is not too late to get my finances in order at 40, while continuing to have a meaningful nursing career and living a life that feels full and intentional.

2. WHO IS THIS SITE FOR?

It’s for everyone. You don’t have to be a nurse, an RN, an LVN, or even work in healthcare to be here. Everyone is welcome to read and enjoy the content. If you are in any career and feel like you want to be more intentional and accountable with your finances, feel free to come along on my journey.

I also write a lot about being a Per Diem PACU nurse and share stories about nursing in general. So if you’re interested in those things, I tend to yap about them here.

And yes, I know the title is HENRY Nurse, high earner not rich yet, but honestly I am barely a high-earning nurse some days. You definitely do not need to be a high earner to relate to what I share here. Everyone is welcome.

Who My Content Is Not For

This site is not for you if you are looking for get rich quick schemes or easy side hustles that promise fast money. If those actually existed, I would already be doing them. If you find one, let me know. LOL

3. HOW TO USE MY CONTENT

Enjoy it, learn from it, share it, discuss it with others, take it with a grain of salt, criticize it, and compare it with your current financial plan.

I am not a financial advisor or a Certified Financial Planner. The content shared here reflects my personal financial decisions and real-life experiences, not professional financial advice.

 

I am also not starting this journey from zero or a negative net worth. I do not have debt, so I will not be personally writing about getting out of debt or paying off student loans. That said, I may share interviews or stories from other nurses who are navigating debt and how they are tackling it.
